My MUN Experience

THE JOURNEY

I joined ACMUN last year, in 2025. Obviously, for the first time, achieving something glamorous at that stage was more like a dream than reality. However, out of the blue, I got 15th place in my committee. Not so much but good for a starter.

I later tried to sign up for an Inter-School MUN delegation but was rejected. However, the very next day I was offered a spot in another Interschool MUN. I took the opportunity, participated and ended up earning a Special Mention.

In my opinion, what people learn from MUN depends on their perspective. Here are the things I learned:

WHAT I LEARNED

• Negotiation: It means talking with another person or a group of people to reach an agreement. It is much better than shouting matches over something that could easily be resolved through discussion.
• Research: Basically, hopping onto websites to find information about whatever topic you are concerned with. This skill will come in handy later in life.
• Making speeches and documents: In the age of generative AI, this is a skill needed if we don’t want to become mindless zombies enslaved by our mechanical overlords. Who knows? If we stop learning this skill, we might end up writing every political speech, courtroom argument and just about everything else. Not exactly the future I want to live in.
• Global Awareness: MUN helps you figure out what’s happening in the rest of the world- not just in your neighborhood. Sure, you might get a headache because of some questionable decision made by a world leader that you can’t stand, but at least you’ll know what is going on in the world.
• Confidence: Some people have it in abundance, some barely have any and rest are somewhere in between. MUN won’t turn you into the world’s greatest speaker overnight, but at least help you get through a speech without more than five stutters.

Overall, MUN is a great experience that helps in more ways than one. It helps you to connect with new people, just as it did for me. It also improves your general knowledge broadens your perspective. And finally… it’s just great.

THE JOURNEY

A few years back, I was attending school normally as I usually do, but that day was not normal. I heard from my classmates about something called a MUN. "A MUN? What is that?" I asked. My classmates went on explaining about this boring old thing, and how things went on in a MUN.

I was hesitant at first, but decided to participate anyway. For some time, I felt I was out of place, but after deliberating for some time, I got the gist of it. One thing that I have learned for sure after so many MUNs is that it is not just a boring old lecture that we are used to, but a learning experience that will bring an enormous change in our lives.

After attending so many MUNs, I have actively started reading newspapers, which keeps me informed of the daily world; I also feel more informed about things.
